Cozy Hobbies to Do at Home

Whether it’s a rainy spring day, a summer heatwave, or just your day off, sometimes a quiet afternoon at home is just what the doctor ordered. But when you’ve finished binging your favorite TV show or have a headache from two straight hours of scrolling, you might find yourself looking for another way to fill the time.

If you’re in the market for a cozy hobby to spice up your alone time, here are some ideas to help get you started!

Knitting or Crocheting
There’s nothing quite like curling up with a ball of yarn and watching a scarf (or hat, or purse!) come to life in your hands. Knitting and crocheting are not only soothing hobbies thanks to their repetitive, almost meditative motions, but they also leave you with a new blanket, scarf, or sweater a a souvenir your quiet afternoon(s). They’re the perfect mix of comfort and creativity!

Puzzles
Whether you love 500-piece landscapes or challenging 1,000-piece masterpieces, puzzles are a peaceful and cozy way to pass the time. They keep your hands and mind busy while letting you zone out to music, a podcast, or the gentle sound of rain outside. Plus, you don’t need any experience or education to get started — anyone can do a puzzle!

Candle Making
A hobby that makes your sanctuary even cozier? Yes, please! Candle making lets you play with scents, colors, vessels, and decorations, while creating something that will literally warm up your home. Plus, lighting a candle you made yourself feels extra special, and you never have to worry about not liking the scent.

Baking Bread

The simple act of mixing, kneading, and waiting for dough to rise is as comforting as the smell that will soon fill your kitchen. Baking bread is a hobby that engages all your senses and rewards you with something delicious to enjoy afterward. If you want an all-day activity, try sourdough. If you’re looking for less of a time commitment, a focaccia or yeasted white bread will do the trick in way less time.

Journaling
On days when you want to slow down, journaling is a soothing way to gather your thoughts, reflect, or even dream up future plans. With a cup of tea and a cozy blanket, it becomes less of a task and more of a ritual. Here’s a list of prompts for whatever you may want to achieve through journaling!

Painting (by Numbers or Otherwise)
If you’ve ever wanted to paint but felt intimidated, paint-by-numbers is a perfect solution. It’s relaxing, colorful, and gives you a finished piece of art to hang when you’re done. You don’t have to worry about being “good,” you just get to enjoy the process without the pressure. Once you’ve tried a few, challenge yourself to freehand one, or try painting a custom design on an item like a box, rock, or seashell.

Embroidery

My personal favorite hobby, embroidery combines mindfulness with artistry. It’s a slow, meditative craft that pairs well with some terrible reality TV (if that’s your thing… it’s mine!) With just a couple of stitches under your belt, there’s no limit to the designs you can create on hats, t-shirts, tote bags, or even a canvas to hang on the wall.

Reading
Sometimes the coziest hobby is the most obvious: diving into a good book! Whether it’s a fantasy world, a cozy mystery, or a nonfiction topic you’ve been curious about, reading transports your mind while keeping your body wrapped up in your own special spot.

Herb Gardening Indoors
Whether you’re using a hydroponic grow kit or just tending to little pots of basil, mint, or rosemary on your windowsill, nothing beats snipping some fresh herbs for salad or tea. This perfect way to spend a quiet afternoon adds greenery to your home and gives you something fresh to look forward to every day.

Coloring Books
Coloring isn’t just for kids (though it IS a great activity to do as a family!) — it’s surprisingly relaxing for adults, too. With endless designs to choose from, you can spend hours filling pages with color, focusing on nothing but the calming scratch of colored pencils on paper. If you want to get really creative, try making your own design on Canva and printing them out to color!

Clay Bead Bracelets (Or Necklaces!)

Cuddle up and make your own custom jewelry with a clay beading set. With endless combinations of colors and charms, you can create something that feels like you with very little effort or time — take it easy, pour yourself your favorite beverage, and put on a killer playlist while making a new addition to your jewelry box, or gifts for your friends! I’ve been using this kit, and I love the summery colors and charms!
